I’m super lucky – both Dash and Finn don’t mind car rides at all. But, for some, traveling with your dog is an anxiety-provoking event for everyone involved.  Very few things are worse than a nervous dog in a car – drooling, whining, panting, shaking, whining…not only distracting during the car ride but so upsetting to watch!

Dog Travel Tips

If your dog is afraid of car rides, there are a few things you can try to help ease your dog’s anxiety in the car.  There’s the Thundershirt or the Anxiety Wrap, Bach Flower Essences, a calming cap, and desensitization techniques.

Best way to travel with your dog?  With a crate or carrier.  Nothing drives me crazier than seeing a dog with its head out the car window.  I use the Sleepypod for Finn and a carseat for Dash.  Don’t ever let your dog sit in your lap while you drive.  Not only is it illegal in some states to let your dog ride in your lap, it’s super dangerous.  And that also goes for putting a dog on top of a car!

Cars For Dogs

Yes,  there is such a thing.  Traveling with your dog has never been easier  because there are even cars that are made just for dogs and dog lovers!  For example, Subuaru of America has recently launched their Dog Tested.  Dog Approved.™ campaign that features Grant Weber, Subaru Canine Sales Associate.  He sells cars to dogs.  As part of their campaign, Subaru has launched a facebook app that is really kinda cute – there’s the Subaru Dog Matcher, the Ask the Expert, Put Your Dog in a Subaru, and the Canine Driver’s License Division (my personal favorite – you can make a driver’s license for your dog – I made one for Dash but make sure you put in a fake address).  Grant Weber also suggested that Dash would prefer the Subaru Legacy.
