ID Your Pet Day is July 1st and we’ve teamed up with the ASPCA to help spread awareness. More pets go missing during the July 4th weekend fireworks celebration than any other time of year. Identification can make all of the difference if your pet goes missing. Your dog should always have a collar with an ID tag that includes your name, current phone number, and any other important information (such as medical conditions).
Take your identification up a notch and have your pet microchipped as a way of permanent identification. However, keep in mind that if your microchip information isn’t up to date it won’t help get your pet home! If you’ve changed any of your contact information (phone, address, even email) make sure you update that information immediately. ID Your Pet Day is your yearly reminder to double check that all of your pet’s identification information is correct!
Heaven forbid your pet does go missing, take the following steps:
- Contact Philadelphia Animal Care and Control (ACCT) to file a Lost Report.
- Have a detailed description of your pet and area where your pet was lost from (and last seen).
- Be diligent. Stop by ACCT as often as you can and walk through the kennels on your own to see if your pet was brought in. As the city’s shelter, ACCT is required to take in ALL animals and is often overwhelmed and bursting at the seams.
- Use social media – several Philadelphia neighborhoods have “lost pet” groups on Facebook. Have a recent picture and any other useful information (such as, skittish – don’t chase) for your post. Feel free to post your lost pet on ThePhillyDog’s facebook page!
To help raise awareness for ID Your Pet Day, we’ve partnered with the ASPCA to giveaway this tote bag, frisbee, and travel cup.
