The Philadelphia Water Department will host a panel of esteemed judges, 15 canine contestants, and 15 dog owners to select the next Watershed Spokesdog. Two dog pageants will take place; one in Queen Village and another in Northern Liberties. Each will feature 15 dogs chosen by online voters to compete for the title of Philly Water’s Best Friend. Both champions will receive a $200 prize from a local pet store or dog-care provider. In exchange, each must attend three community events. In doing so, they will teach others about pollution caused by pet waste using biodegradable bag dispensers and brochures.
Queen Village Pageant will be held on Saturday June 2nd at 10 am. at Mario Lanza Park while the Northern Liberties Pageant will be held on Saturday, June 9th at 3 pm at Liberty Lands Park.
The purpose of the Philly Water’s Best Friend Spokesdog Competition is to reduce water pollution. Organizers plan to accomplish this by teaching pet owners about the importance of picking up dog waste. Sponsors of this program include the Northern Liberties Neighbors Association, Partnership for the Delaware Estuary, Philadelphia Water Department, and the Queen Village Neighbors Association. Prizes are being donated by Chic Petique and WAG: Whole Animal Gym.

When I first moved to Philadelphia in 2004 I went to Queen Village b/c they were highly recommended by those in the community. Unfortunately though by 2009 I feel the place has gone down in service. My last experience (about 2 years ago) ended with me waiting over 40 minutes for my appointment and then being rushed through my dog’s appointment. My dog suffers from anxiety and it takes her time to warm up to people, but instead of the vet listening to me she rushed into the room and didn’t even take the time to get to know my dog-just started the check up. I understand that vets are very busy and that there are other clients waiting, but for me when I’m in the room with you my dog and I are what matters most. Prior to this I had my cat’s check up and again was rushed through the entire process. So once I found a new vet (check my reviews!) I haven’t returned. Sad to have to leave, but just wasn’t the right fit.
