What if there was a safe way to keep pests away that was truly natural and actually worked? One that you didn’t mind putting on your dog to keep away mosquitos and ticks? Well, this Friday, March 18th, 2016, Wondercide will be in front of the sharks to talk about their all natural Flea, Tick & Mosquito Treatment products (9 pm – 10 pm ET, ABC). Don’t miss this episode!
The creator of Wondercide, Stephanie Boone, became interested in this topic after her dog Luna suffered devastating side effects from vet-prescribed flea & tick treatment. At age 10, Luna developed pesticide poisoning, with symptoms ranging from seizures and chronic skin issues to liver and kidney failure. Several vets recommended that she put Luna down, but she managed to nurse Luna back to health. She was inspired to learn more about pesticide formulations, the harmful impact of traditional pesticides on human and animal health, regulatory laws, and federal environmental policies.
For example, – did you know that chemical pesticides have been linked to childhood cancers, ADHD, autism, chronic allergies, and poisonings? The majority of our pesticide exposure – 80% – actually happens indoors! Scary. So what do you do? Use an “all natural” pest control that doesn’t really work all that well or stick with the standard product that works but you need a bio-hazard suit when you use it? But what if there was a safe, completely natural solution that treated the entire environment even more effectively than its chemical-filled counterparts and posed NO RISK of pesticide exposure?
And what exactly is in it that makes it work? While you can find a list of all of their product ingredients on site, this particular product contains:
Ingredients (product made in the USA): CEDAR: organic cedar oil (active), hydrated silica (inert) | CEDAR + LEMONGRASS: organic cedar oil (active), therapeutic grade lemongrass oil (active), hydrated silica (inert) | CEDAR + ROSEMARY: organic cedar oil (active), therapeutic grade rosemary oil (active), hydrated silica (inert)
Want to try for yourself? Wondercide is giving away this amazing pet bundle to one lucky winner – retail value is $55! This bundle includes one 16oz Pets + Home in Lemongrass, one 4oz Pets + Home in Rosemary, and one 16oz Skin Tonic. Remember – the more tasks you complete the greater the chances in winning! Winner will be selected by March 26, 2016!
Wayyyy back in the day, when I first started ThePhillyDog.com, I was working at a local Philly pet boutique (The Chic Petique) and learning everything I needed to know about natural dog food and pet care. It was at The Chic that I saw my first bag of Solid Gold dog food and decided Dash needed to try it out. I was so impressed by it that I had to write about Solid Gold Wee Bits. I remember thinking to myself, more pet owners need to know about this line of pet food!
The Solid Gold Line
And so began a bit of a love affair with the Solid Gold line of natural pet foods. While my cats have stayed tried and true to the Solid Gold Katz -N- Flocken® line, Dash has tried lots of different brands and foods (from homemade to canned to raw). With the newest addition to the Philly Dog family (Imogene), I’ve been a bit undecided about which food direction I wanted to take. Recently, Solid Gold reached out to me and asked whether I would be willing to put Imogene on a 30 day “taste test” of their Howling at the Stars™ canned food line and their Lil’ Boss™ dry recipe. Disclosure:In exchange for writing an honest review and hosting a giveaway, I received three (3) months worth of pet food for my time and effort.
While I first wrote about Wee Bits™ back in 2009, Solid Gold has actually been around since 1974! Truly innovative at a time when we were feeding our dog cans of Alpo mixed with bacon fat (I swear. Really). It was one Sissy Harrington McGill who was inspired by the overall quality of health in pets in Europe, which led her to create Solid Gold. Now that “natural” is all the rave in the pet industry, it really does amaze me that Solid Gold has been around my entire lifetime.
While the packaging has had a recent refresh, I was glad to see that the quality was still as good as always. The food is grain and gluten free, with no added corn, soy, artificial preservatives, flavors or sugar added. Which means it’s the kind of food I want my dog to eat.
I warned the Solid Gold representative that Imogene is…well…picky. Like, the pickiest dog in Philadelphia. During her entire month in foster care and our first month together, she refused to eat anything but Pedigree (blech). She turned her nose up at Merrick, Nature’s Variety, Go Now!, Natural Balance, Evangers – and that’s just a few of the brands I tried. I spent a lot of money trying to get her to eat a better quality food.
I was also a little hesitant about agreeing to review the dry kibble. She also only has 5 teeth and I was concerned she wouldn’t eat it. But, as you can see from the image to the left, it was perfect size for a small breed dog. Even one who only has 5 teeth.
So…Did she eat the food? Oh. Yes. She ate.
I get this same little dance from her every day at breakfast and dinner. What a relief! She inhales it. I’m actually thinking of purchasing one of those slow feeder bowls to get her to slow down. When I first started feeding her, I was giving her the canned for breakfast and only the dry kibble at night. However, after about 3 weeks, she started picking at the dry. I noticed that despite the happy dance, she wasn’t gobbling it up right away. She would look at her dish, then look at me. So then I started mixing the dry with the wet – and she went back to gobbling it right up. Little bugger. She just prefers the canned! Apparently, she has me trained very well.
The only thing that bugged me? I had to open the cans with a can opener. No pull tabs. Maybe that’s just the ones I got. I’m incredibly lazy.
You can purchase Solid Gold at several online retailers and various brick and mortar stores. For a full list, check out their product/store locator here.
Want to try your luck before buying? Solid Gold is giving away to one lucky winner a 4 lb bag of food of the winner’s choice, a t-shirt, a tote bag, food scoop and more!

I’m always on the lookout for all-natural, organic pet treats. So when I heard that a small company called One Dog Organic Bakery was looking for “taste testers” to review their treats, I asked to participate. In exchange for writing this post and giving an honest review, One Dog Organic Bakery sent me three bags of treats for Dash to test out.
The Story Behind One Dog Organic
One Dog Organic Bakery was started by Veronica Glynn after she lost her two year old cat “Kitty” to kidney failure caused by melamine found in a pet food recall. I also lost my cat during this same recall, which caused me to become hyper-vigilant about what I was feeding my pets. Like me, Veronica and her family became more diligent about what they fed their pets and began cooking and baking their food. Their family and friends quickly jumped on board and before they knew it, they had a bakery on their hands!
What makes One Dog Organic Baker so unique is that they are able to their customers’ individual needs because they don’t mass produce their products. In fact, each order is baked fresh upon order and are prepared in small batches to ensure the highest quality and freshness. To ensure that their treats are nutritionally sound, One Dog Organic Bakery goes one step further and consults with several pet nutritionists, veterinarians and other pet professionals.
One Dog Organic Bakery: The Review
I was given three bags of One Dog Organic Bakery treats: Pumpkin Spice with Flaxseeds, Peanut Butter with Chia, and their Signature Recipe Ginger Snaps. As with any product review, the question is always whether or not Dash will actually eat it. Dash gets a little funny about biscuits – sometimes he just gives them a sniff or lick but won’t actually eat them. The One Dog Organic Bakery treats, however, were a BIG hit – Dash immediately grabbed it and ran to the other side of the room (always a good sign that he has an extra tasty treat). After chomping it down, he came right back and “sat” for another one. He seemed to love the Pumpkin Spice with Flaxseeds the best!
One more treat, please?
The only downside I found was that the instructions recommend using within 14 days of opening. There were way too many treats in the bags for me to use up within two weeks – which means I’ll end up having to throw a good portion out. I’m sure it’s because these are all natural treats without lots of chemical preservatives. I wonder if you’d be able to prolong freshness by keeping them in the refrigerator. With such healthy ingredients and knowing that these treats are made by pet owners who really and truly care about pet health, I would definitely purchase these treats for Dash. You can purchase them directly on the One Dog Organic site and prices range from $6.99 to $20.99 – and you get free shipping if you spend $30.00.
Not ready to buy just yet? We’re giving away two prizes to two lucky winners! Enter to win a 4 ounce bag of treats with one $25 gift certificate to shop at OneDogOrganic.com and one 8 ounce bag of treats with a $10 gift certificate. Two winners will be randomly selected on Wednesday, February 11th, 2015 and notified via email and in the Rafflecopter widget below.
Whenmy canine kids, Inc.offered me the chance to test out their new PRECISION FIT™harness for free, I jumped at the chance. With all of Dash’s recent weight loss, he was in desperate need of a new harness. Since he has a collapsing trachea and pulls on the leash when he sees another dog (or person), I prefer to use a harness on him. While I was satisfied with the previous harness I had bought, I was looking for something better, more affordable, and softer. The PRECISION FIT ™ harness looked like it would be the perfect replacement.
PRECISION FIT ™ Review
The Precision Fit nylon harness is made of a soft fabric and is the step-in type with adjustable sides. When I first looked at it, I thought that there was no way Velcro would be strong enough to hold Dash back. But then I realized that this wasn’t just the standard kind of Velcro you can get from a craft store – it’s military grade. There is a double ring leash closure that provides added security and control. I have to say that the double ring leash closure is my favorite part of the Precision Fit harness – you can see in the video below that the double ring adds additional strength:
I am really happy that I had the chance to review this product – I am beyond satisfied with Dash’s new PRECISION FIT™ harness. He’s practically living in it at this point! Since it’s made of nylon, it’s soft and more comfortable for him to keep on for long periods of time. It’s super easy to slip on, adjusts to fit his body shape, and is really lightweight. I also like that it will easily adjust to fit over his sweater/coat when it gets colder out. Plus, the reflective trim will make him easier to see at night when he goes for a walk.
Enter to WIN a Precision Fit harness – plus a discount offer!
If you are looking for a new harness, I definitely recommend the Precision Fit by my canine kids, Inc. There are tons of colors (and patterns) to choose from – you can see them in action on themy canine kids facebook page. Harnesses come in 5 sizes, fitting dogs from 4 pounds to 50 pounds.
Think you might like to get a PRECISION FIT™ harness for your pup? Right now, area Dog and Cats Rule retail stores (Newtown, Pennington, Maple Glen, Princeton) are offering an exclusive Precision Fit discount to all Philly Dog readers – just mention that you saw this review on The Philly Dog and you’ll get 10%discount off your harness!

It’s Week #2 of Pet360’s #SummerOfPets and the theme is “All American Furry Fun.” This week the topic of conversation is around the phrase “Made in the USA.” What exactly does “Made in the USA” mean, anyway? When a brand says that their treats are “Made in the USA,” does that mean that event the meat source is in America? Or just that the product is actually put together on American soil? Join in on the conversation about deciphering all natural dog treats and food in the Pet 360 Natural Pet Group conversation titled “‘Made in the USA’ products.”
Why I Buy “Made in the USA”
Years ago, I learned a tough lesson about pet food when I had to euthanize my cat, Sophie, who had eaten melamine-tainted Iams canned cat food. She was a victim of that huge recall where many pet food brands had to pull products off the shelves because of the melamine poisoning. It was really the first time I ever gave a thought about what I was feeding my pets or where it was made (Iams, like many other brands, was being produced in China). Today just about every pet owner knows how dangerous chicken jerky treats that are manufactured in China can be. A recent Pet360 poll reveled that over 86% of pet parents prefer to buy products that are “Made in the USA.” I’m not the least bit surprised.
As a result of my experience, I now only buy products that are Made in the U.S.A. or in Canada. Sure, any brand can get hit by a recall, no matter where it is produced. But at least we do have some FDA oversight for our petfood. Always read the product labels – the bag may advertise that it’s Made in the U.S.A., but the meat may come from somewhere else – such as China.
If you’re interested in shopping for some dog treats that are Made in the U.S.A., check out the Only Natural Pet brand on Pet360.com. And don’t forget – for a limited time you get $15 off plus free shipping on any order over $89. Just use the code SUN15 at checkout.
Pet360 is also giving away two $100 prize packages of Only Natural Pet treats! Each gift basket contains food and treats that are Made in the USA. Enter through the Rafflecopter widget on the Pet360 #SummerOfPets challenge page. The more entries you complete, the greater your chances are of winning!
