The goal of this event is to get dogs out of the shelter and into the running community. Runners out for their morning jog can stop at the table for a well deserved beverage recharge, meet PAWS dogs in the running program, and learn about the benefits of adoption and running with a “buddy” for safety, motivation, and companionship.
The Running Miles with Philadelphia’s Homeless Monsters group was founded to connect Philadelphians with homeless dogs as running companions and provides support for the animal shelters through sponsored adoption events and running adventures for the homeless dogs. One of the main reasons shelter dogs have problems being adopted is they can appear overly excitable. But after sitting in a room for 23 hours a day, even under the care of loving staff and volunteers, a dog can get stir crazy. “Kennel craze” can be easily combated with exercise – after all, a tired dog is a happy dog. A regular running routine for dogs can help take the edge off and proves that dogs can make a wonderful running buddy for their new families.
