Blindness in Senior Dogs

by Dash on March 16, 2010

Another side effect of aging is cataracts, glaucoma, and even blindness.  Today I stumbled across a site called AngelVest which is a store that is an excellent resource for owners of blind dogs.  The “Angel Vest” was created for a dog named Scooter, who, after suffering with diabetes developed inoperable diabetic cataracts.

Each vest is made of denim or a cotton sport cloth and fastened on both sides with clips.  The halo is made of a plastic tubing, reinforced with aluminum tubing to keep it light weight.  Each vest is made to order.

The website also contains a ton of useful links and tips on how to live with a blind dog.  If you have a blind dog, this website is a MUST check out.

That’s pretty cool. We train our guide dogs to lead the blind, but we sometimes forget that our older dogs need help when their eye sight fails. I was hoping to see a video of this product in action on the Angel Vest website. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find one. Maybe they’ll have something on their site in the near future.
